Heavy Metal Soul By the Pound 1996 - What Are Records?
Rick Skatore - Bass & Vocals Joel Maitoza - Drums & Backing Vocals Carlton Smith - Drums & Percusion Doug Pinnick - Vocals Originally released as 6 with a slightly different track list for Enemy Records in Europe, Heavy Metal Soul By the Pound is the last offering from one of the most diverse hard rock/metal outfits of the '80s and '90s. The record starts off blazing with guitarist Jimi Hazel's career-best metal riffing. Songs like "If I Could," "Yeah X 3," and "Simple Minded Simon" are as crushing as they are catchy. This first seven-song section of Heavy Metal Soul By the Pound might be the best music recorded by 24-7 Spyz. The two tracks included that don't appear on 6 ("Earth and Sky" and "Save the Word") replace mostly forgettable numbers with more of the same. With the exception of "No Hope for Niggaz" and maybe "Love for Sale," there isn't much happening on the last two-thirds of this disc. The entirely dissimilar final section of Heavy Metal Soul By the Pound (while offering decent R&B and funky soul) lacks the cool melodic vocal/guitar interplay and just plain heaviness of the record's leadoff material, making the whole release a little confusing and a general disappointment. |
